What is an OTP / Verification Code Scam scam?

A contact asks you to read out or forward a one-time passcode you just received, usually claiming it was sent "by mistake" — sharing it hands over your account.

Red flags to watch for

  • Someone asks you to read out or forward a code you just received, for any reason.
  • They claim the code was sent to you "by mistake" and ask you to send it back.
  • The request follows a call or message you didn't initiate about a login or account issue.
  • They already have some of your real details, making the ask feel more legitimate.

What to do

Never read or forward a one-time code to anyone, for any stated reason -- a legitimate request never needs you to relay it. If you already shared one, change that account's password immediately and check its recent login activity.
